Abstract

First responders are the critical front line of the overdose epidemic, which according to the CDC is a leading cause of injury mortality. A person who experiences an overdose requires immediate medical attention to restore breathing. Emergency medical responders are charged with saving lives, while navigating emotionally charged situations that may be traumatic for families, as well as responders. Stigma remains a barrier to seeking treatment, including emergency care. Understanding overdose “reversal” (reviving a person who is not breathing), potential for precipitated withdrawal, and potential hypoxic brain injury can promote compassion for people who experience overdose, and their families.

  • Learn what happens to a person during overdose and emergency reversal
  • Understand how stigma can be a barrier to seeking medical attention, including emergency care
