Helping Parents Help: Guiding Parents to Create Conditions to Influence Their Teen's Substance Use

Abstract

Teen substance use can lead to parental feelings of confusion, guilt, and hopelessness. This presentation will discuss ways that helping professionals can guide parents when their teen is using substances. Parents cannot control whether their teen uses substances, but parents can create conditions that influence their teen in a positive way. Helping professionals will learn what parents can do to help their teen, including practical ways for parents to gain understanding of their teen's substance use, become more aware of their own thoughts and feelings, and act in ways that increase the likelihood of positive behavior change.

Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of what parents experience when their teen is using substances
  • Learn about the role parents can have in creating conditions for positive behavior change
  • Discuss the helping professional's role in helping parents with teen substance use
