Abstract

Prevention of mental health conditions is an understudied and under-discussed topic with significant potential to improve the lives of many individuals worldwide who struggle with psychiatric illness. National organizations including the US Preventive Services Task Force and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists promote utilizing a prevention approach to perinatal mood and anxiety disorder and yet little attention is given to using a proactive approach. In this talk, Dr. Gopalan and Dr. Krishnamurti will provide an overview of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. They will discuss some innovative strategies being trialed at the University of Pittsburgh to identify individuals at-risk of perinatal depression; offering them personalized preventive care.
