Abstract

One of the most powerful tools those with lived experience have in educating others about mental health and in effecting change in our communities is through story telling. Each person's story is different, but the themes of hardship, perseverance, and resiliency can serve to teach and to inspire. While the stories are already there--we're living them everyday--harnessing these stories and telling them in a way that is accessible and digestable for audiences can be a challenge. NAMI Keystone's "Telling Your Story" workshop uses NAMI's tried-and-true method of story telling extracted from the national "In Our Own Voice" and "Ending the Silence" national presentations. Using the three-act approach of "What Happened?", "What Helps", and "What's Next"; workshop attendees will learn how to effectively structure their personal stories. The workshop also explores important tips on presentation style and method to ensure stories remain concise, on topic, and effective.

Objectives

  • Explore why, as peers with lived experience, effectiveness at telling one's story is important and crucial.
  • Comprehend the "Three Act" approach to story telling and how one can apply their own life experiences to it.
  • Establish 8 tips on methods, meant to guide and inform and effective presentation style.
